Results of previous prospective studies, most notably the Women’s Health Initiative, have suggested that calcium supplementation in postmenopausal women is associated with no increase in cardiovascular (CV) events (Circulation 2007; 115:846); other results have shown only a trend in increased risk for incident ischemic heart disease (Arch Intern Med 2006; 166:869). Now, New Zealand investigators randomized 1471 healthy women (mean age, 74) to receive calcium citrate (1 g) or placebo daily for 5 years. The women or their family members reported the occurrence of CV events during the study period (including sudden death, myocardial infarction [MI], stroke, and transient ischemic attack).
