Information about prevalence of pathogenic BRCA1 mutations in racial and ethnic groups other than women of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage is limited. Investigators enrolled more than 3000 women (age, <65 at diagnosis) with invasive breast cancer in the Northern California site of the Breast Cancer Family Registry. Breast cancers were categorized based on age at diagnosis and family history of breast or ovarian cancer as likely to be hereditary (category A; 1924 women) or less likely to be hereditary (category B; 1257 women). A total of 549 non-Hispanic white women, 444 Asian Americans, 393 Hispanics, and 341 African Americans completed BRCA1 mutation testing.
