Cases of osteonecrosis associated with bisphosphonate (BP) use typically involve the jaw; little is known about the condition at other sites. In a retrospective cohort study of risk factors for aseptic osteonecrosis (AON), researchers evaluated Quebec healthcare registry data for 88,000 individuals older than 65. They identified 196 cases of AON at any site (including the jaw) as defined by ICD-9 code and compared these cases with 1960 randomly selected time-matched controls.
