Many sexually active women acquire at least one type of human papillomavirus (HPV). To understand better the risk for HPV acquisition with a first sexual partner, investigators enrolled university students who had never had vaginal intercourse or who had had first intercourse with one male partner during the prior 3 months. The women completed sexual behavior diaries every 2 weeks and were evaluated for HPV acquisition at 4-month intervals using polymerase chain reaction assays that could detect 37 HPV types. Women who became sexually active with a second partner were censored from the analysis.
