About 40% of U.S. women use some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). In 1999, women spent more than US$600 million on CAM therapies for menopause (although study results have shown that herbal alternatives are ineffective in treating menopausal symptoms [Journal Watch Women’s Health Mar 6 2008]). The Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation evaluated CAM use during the menopausal transition among 2277 premenopausal or early perimenopausal women from five ethnic groups (white, black, Hispanic, Chinese, and Japanese) who completed a survey every year for 6 years on CAM use during the preceding 12 months.
