Because of their efficacy in preventing recurrent disease, aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are being used increasingly as adjuvant endocrine therapy for postmenopausal women with hormone-sensitive early breast cancer. In a substudy of the ATAC trial (Journal Watch Women’s Health Feb 7 2008), investigators measured BMD at baseline and at 1, 2, and 5 years in participants randomized to the AI anastrozole or tamoxifen and in a third group (controls) who were not receiving adjuvant therapy after initial breast cancer surgery. Women who had osteoporosis at baseline, had recently used menopausal hormone therapy or bisphosphonates, or had experienced a recent fracture were excluded.
