The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan effectively lowers blood pressure, but does it have long-term effects on risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke? To find out, investigators analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS).
The analysis included 88,517 women with no history of stroke, diabetes, or CHD at baseline who completed NHS food-frequency questionnaires (FFQs) at regular intervals from 1980 through 2004. The FFQs assessed average food intake during the preceding year, including portion sizes and frequency of consumption of various foods.
