In only a few studies have researchers addressed women’s sexual orientation and sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk, and evidence-based guidelines for lesbian and bisexual STI screening are lacking. Using data from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, an investigator evaluated the relation between sexual orientation and incidence of viral STIs. More than 7600 women (age range, 15–44) answered questionnaires about sexual partners, sexual identity, and history of genital herpes and genital warts. Lesbian and bisexual orientation were categorized based on self-report of sexual partners during the preceding 12 months (sexual behavior) and self-identification as heterosexual, lesbian, or bisexual (sexual identity).
