Breast-feeding is recommended by many health-related professional organizations, and raising breast-feeding rates is among the goals of the U.S. Healthy People 2010 initiative. However, hospital and birth-center practices do not always support this goal, according to the CDC’s first national Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC) Survey. The survey was conducted in 2007 and included questions about seven measures of breast-feeding support. More than 2500 hospitals (response rate, 82%) as well as 121 birth centers (response rate, 88%) in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico contributed evaluable data.
