The marked discrepancy in dementia prevalence between older women and men could be primarily because of women’s greater longevity. The 90+ Study is among the first with sufficient power to allow researchers to estimate age- and sex-specific prevalence of all-cause dementia in individuals older than 90. Of 911 participants, three quarters were women. Almost half underwent examinations of cognitive status; the remaining participants completed written questionnaires (either personally or through informants) or telephone interviews as validated measures of dementia.
The overall prevalence of dementia at baseline (mean age, 94; range, 90–106) was 41%, with women being almost twice as likely as men to have dementia (45% vs. 28%). At age 90, dement…
