To assess the effects of hormone therapy on health-related quality of life (QOL), researchers for the Women’s International Study of Long Duration Oestrogen after Menopause (WISDOM) trial randomized 3700 postmenopausal women (age range, 50–69) in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand to combined hormone therapy (0.625 mg conjugated equine estrogen plus 2.5 or 5.0 mg medroxyprogesterone) or placebo. They used multiple questionnaires to assess physical and emotional well-being and QOL at several time points (planned median follow-up, 10 years). The study was closed at a median follow-up of 1 year, when results of the Women’s Health Initiative were published in the U.S. (JW Womens Health Aug 7 2002).
