Borrowing and sharing prescription medications is risky, especially for women of reproductive age. Data from the annual HealthStyles surveys from 2001 to 2006 were analyzed for patterns of borrowing and sharing prescriptions among English-speaking adults (age, ≥18). No specific medications were identified, and no questions about health insurance were asked. Of 26,000 usable responses, 7400 were from women of reproductive age (range, 18–44).
Overall, 29% of women and 27% of men reported having ever borrowed or shared prescription medications. Women and men reported similar rates of borrowing medications, but sharing them with someone else was more common among women.
