Among premenopausal women with breast cancer who receive both chemotherapy and anti-estrogen therapy, the prevalence of vasomotor symptoms can reach 90%. In addition to impairing quality of life, hot flashes in breast cancer survivors can lead to discontinuation of therapies such as tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors. The safety of hormone therapy in breast cancer survivors is uncertain, and the FDA lists a history of breast cancer as a contraindication to use of estrogens and progestins. Accordingly, safe and effective nonhormonal treatments for this population would be welcome.
