Women with mutations in BRCA1 or 2 face lifetime risk for breast cancer of 56% to 84%, and their breast malignancies occur at earlier ages than in women without these mutations. Risks for ovarian cancer range from 36% to 46% in BRCA1 carriers and from 10% to 27% in BRCA2 carriers. Cancer of the fallopian tubes is also more common in BRCA1/2 carriers than in other women. In a meta-analysis, investigators evaluated data from 10 case-control and cohort studies to estimate the effectiveness of prophylactic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) in reducing risk for breast and ovarian or tubal cancers in women with BRCA1/2 mutations.
