An estimated 12% to 20% of women who undergo moderate- or high-dose chest radiation therapy (chest RT) for pediatric malignancies receive breast cancer diagnoses by age 45. The Children’s Oncology Group (COG) recommends annual screening mammography beginning at age 25 or 8 years after RT, whichever occurs later. Investigators conducted a survey to assess breast cancer surveillance in 551 survivors who were exposed to chest RT compared with two randomly sampled low-risk cohorts: 561 female childhood cancer survivors who were not exposed to chest RT and 662 cancer-free sisters of childhood cancer survivors.
