High resting heart rate is associated with excess risk for coronary events in men. To see whether this is also true in women, investigators used data from participants (129,135 postmenopausal women) in the Women’s Health Initiative. Resting heart rates were determined by palpating radial pulses. Participants provided information about other coronary risk factors (hypertension, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, saturated fat consumption, alcohol and caffeine intake, and total physical activity) as well as depression and anxiety.
