About half of all Americans routinely use dietary supplements (most commonly, multivitamins), spending more than US$20 billion annually. Can women expect protection against cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer to be among the health benefits of multivitamins? Women’s Health Initiative investigators examined this possible relation in 162,000 participants (age range at enrollment, 50–79). Information about use of dietary supplements was collected through personal interviews at baseline and periodically during the study (median follow-up, 8 years); in addition, women brought supplement bottles to visits for verification. Clinical outcomes were evaluated with adjudicated self-reports.
