Preterm labor is a particularly common cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. In a European prospective cohort study, researchers assessed incidence of mild and serious adverse events after single, sequential, or combined use of tocolytic agents to manage preterm labor in 1920 pregnancies (mean gestational age, 29 weeks). Drugs evaluated were nifedipine (a calcium channel blocker), atosiban (an oxytocin antagonist), ritodrine and fenoterol (β-adrenergic agonists), indomethacin (a cyclooxygenase inhibitor), magnesium sulfate, and transdermal nitroglycerin.
