After a first fragility fracture, risk for subsequent fractures rises. In the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures, a U.S. longitudinal cohort study, investigators assessed risk for incident osteoporotic fractures based on humeral fracture history in 8049 ambulatory, community-dwelling older women (age, ≥65); mean follow-up was 9.8 years.
Of women who reported proximal humeral fractures, 14% sustained subsequent hip fractures, whereas only 10% of women without proximal humeral fractures did so. Analysis adjusted for several variables (e.g., age, BMD, self-reported health status, recent falls, depth perception, prior nonhumeral fractures) showed that women with prior proximal humeral fractures still had >50% higher risk for subsequent hip fracture…
