Although intrauterine devices (IUDs) are the most commonly used contraceptive method in many developed countries, this highly effective, long-term, reversible form of contraception is underused in the U.S. Researchers surveyed 412 women and adolescents to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and interest about IUDs.
Women (age range, 15–44) who sought emergency contraception (EC; 15%) or pregnancy testing (85%) at four urban family planning clinics were recruited; survey response rate was 85%. More than 90% of participants were younger than 30, and most (72% of pregnancy-test seekers and 53% of EC seekers) were black.
