Healthy lifestyles are associated with lower risk for diabetes. In the Cardiovascular Health Study, investigators prospectively examined the association of modifiable lifestyle factors and new-onset diabetes (defined primarily based on new prescriptions for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents) in 2859 women and 2024 men during 10 years. The following factors were defined as risk lowering: physical activity at or above median, dietary score in upper two quintiles, no or moderate alcohol use, no smoking, and not being overweight (BMI <25 kg/m2; waist circumference <88 cm for women and <92 cm for men).
