Women often report memory problems during the menopausal transition. In a longitudinal study, investigators analyzed data from 2362 participants in the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN) who underwent cognitive testing during the fourth through eighth annual follow-up visits. Participants who initiated menopausal hormone therapy or oral contraceptives (OCs) before becoming menopausal were excluded from analysis while they were using HT, but could reenter the study on discontinuation of hormones (and were defined as prior hormone users). Women who were defined as postmenopausal hormone users did not initiate HT until after their final menstrual periods.
