Manifestations of vaginal atrophy affect 40% of postmenopausal women. In two manufacturer-supported studies, researchers evaluated the safety and efficacy of vaginal estrogen cream to relieve signs and symptoms of postmenopausal vaginal atrophy.
The first study involved 423 postmenopausal women who were randomized to use 0.3-mg conjugated estrogen (CE) cream or placebo cream vaginally (either 21 days on and 7 days off or twice weekly). Following the initial 12-week, double-blinded trial, all participants used open-label CE cream for 40 weeks consistent with their previous dosing schedules.
