Twins have higher perinatal morbidity rates than singleton infants — but are twins who are conceived following assisted reproductive technology (ART) at greater risk than those conceived spontaneously? To resolve conflicting data, researchers in Western Australia conducted a cohort study using information collected about twins during a 7-year period. To remove bias, the investigators compared outcomes in all spontaneously conceived (SC) twins as well as the subset of unlike-sex (ULS) SC twins (i.e., dizygotic twins) with those in ART twins, who are predominantly dizygotic.
