Results of large, population-based studies have suggested that hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (e.g., preeclampsia, gestational hypertension) predict subsequent excess risk for cardiovascular disease (JW Womens Health Nov 8 2007). Two research groups used different study methods to investigate this postulate further.
In the first study, researchers prospectively assessed cardiovascular risk factors from 1995 through 1997 in 15,000 Norwegian women who had given birth from 1965 to 1995. In women with histories of preeclampsia or gestational hypertension, mean BMI at follow-up was about 2 kg/m2 higher than that in women without such histories.
