Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrinopathy in women. Affected women have twice the risk for metabolic syndrome as women of similar age in the general population, but risk for metabolic syndrome in male relatives of women with PCOS is unknown. Researchers assessed the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among 211 fathers (mean age, 57) of PCOS women compared with that in 1153 men (age, ≥40) from the Third National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES III), and in 58 brothers (mean age, 29) of women with PCOS compared with that in 582 men (age range, 18–40) from NHANES III.
