Following recent media reports that long-term use of oral bisphosphonates for postmenopausal osteoporosis can raise risk for spontaneous femur fractures in some women, the FDA stated that ongoing data analysis beginning in 2008 has not revealed a clear connection between bisphosphonates and such fractures. The FDA also advised clinicians to follow drug label recommendations when prescribing bisphosphonates and to report adverse events to MedWatch or 1-800-FDA-1088. In a recent statement on long-term bisphosphonate use, the Endocrine Society agrees with the FDA's position and emphasizes that patients should discuss any concerns about their medications with their healthcare providers.
