Migraine headaches are experienced by more than a quarter of reproductive-age women. In a cross-sectional Brazilian study of women who used combination oral contraceptives (OCs), investigators evaluated prevalence of migraine and nonmigraine headaches and effects of OC use on occurrence and intensity of headache. Among 493 OC users (age range, 18–40) who were evaluated during routine clinic visits, 480 reported having experienced at least one headache in their lifetime. Among women with headache histories, 80 (16%) met International Headache Society criteria for migraine and 400 (83%) met criteria for nonmigraine headaches. Among women with migraines, 13 met criteria for aura.
