Intrauterine contraception (IUC) is extremely effective, and promoting its use could be a major strategy to curb unintended pregnancy in the U.S., particularly among adolescents. Investigators randomized 23 teens (age range, 14–18; 15 black, 4 white, 2 Latina, 2 other) to the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) or the copper T380A intrauterine device (CU IUD) and followed them for 6 months after insertion.
Six participants had histories of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and four had STIs at initial screening. Discontinuation rates were 25% for LNG-IUS and 55% for CU IUD (a statistically insignificant between-group difference).
