Because proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) suppress stomach acid secretion, calcium absorption can be affected; however, previous studies have not consistently shown excess hip fracture risk with PPI use. Investigators used data from the Women's Health Initiative to prospectively examine associations between PPI use and fracture risk in 161,806 postmenopausal women with no prior histories of hip fracture. Women were followed for a mean of 7.8 years; 2% of participants had reported PPI use at baseline.
