Data about the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives in obese women are sparse. To assess the effects of subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC) on ovulation in extremely obese women (body-mass index, ≥40.0 kg/m2), U.S. researchers assessed circulating levels of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), estradiol (E2), and progesterone (P4) at regular intervals for 26 weeks following administration of 104-mg DMPA-SC at baseline and 12 weeks in five normal-weight (BMI, 18.5–24.9), five obese (BMI, 30.0–39.9), and five extremely obese (BMI, ≥40.0) women.
