Pharmacies often have more accessible hours and locations than family planning clinics or other health facilities. Why not enlist pharmacists (who already are authorized in all 50 states to administer vaccines) to help lower barriers to continuation of contraceptives such as depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injections? In a small, manufacturer-supported pilot study to investigate the feasibility of accessing DMPA through pharmacies, 50 women who sought to initiate, resume, or continue use of DMPA at a Planned Parenthood clinic received initial subcutaneous DMPA (DMPA-SQ) injections at the clinic, and then were randomized to receive 3- and 6-month injections at the clinic or at a designated community pharmacy (all at no cost).
