In the U.S., almost one quarter of labors are induced. To determine whether induction negatively affects labor's second stage, researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study using medical records from 14,727 women with singleton vertex pregnancies (21% induced and 79% spontaneous labors). The effects of induction on second-stage duration, mode of delivery, and occurrence of complications were evaluated; the influence of parity also was assessed.
Analysis adjusted for confounders (e.g., maternal age, body-mass index, epidural use) showed no difference in mean second-stage duration for induced versus spontaneous labors in nulliparas (102 and 103 minutes) or multiparas (31 and 30 minutes); risk for prolonged second stage also did not differ…
