After results of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) trial of estrogen-progestin hormone therapy (HT) were published in 2002 (JW Womens Health Aug 7 2002), HT use declined precipitously among U.S. women; moreover, the nationwide incidence of invasive breast cancer fell by almost 12% between 2001 and 2004 (JW Oncol Hematol May 14 2007). Among older Canadian women (age range, 50–69), use of combination HT declined by 9.9% annually from 2000 through 2006. Now, Canadian investigators have used age-standardized national incidence rates of invasive breast cancer from 1996 through 2006 to assess trends in breast cancer incidence before and after 2002.
