The translation of higher surgical volume into shorter procedure times and better patient outcomes seems intuitive. In a 4-year retrospective review using the Perspective database of inpatient information voluntarily provided by >500 U.S. hospitals, researchers evaluated this correlation for vaginal hysterectomy in >77,000 women who underwent surgeries performed by 6195 gynecologic surgeons. Surgeons were stratified into tertiles; low-volume surgeons performed <5.4 vaginal procedures annually, and high-volume surgeons performed >13 vaginal procedures annually.
