Endometrial biopsy is widely employed in ambulatory practice as a means to evaluate postmenopausal or otherwise abnormal uterine bleeding, but comparative data about patient pain as a function of biopsy device are sparse. Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University (the trial sponsor) randomized 70 women (mean age, 46; mostly premenopausal) in whom endometrial biopsy was indicated to undergo biopsy with the Pipelle (flexible plastic cannula; outer diameter, 3.1 mm; generates suction with an internal piston) or the Explora curette (less-flexible plastic cannula with cutting edge; outer diameter, 3.0 mm; generates suction with a locking syringe).
