Emergency contraception (EC) became available without prescription in 2006 but has not yet achieved the anticipated effect of lowering unintended pregnancy rates. One explanation might be women's lack of knowledge about EC. In an analysis of data from the 2006–2008 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), researchers investigated whether 7356 women (age range, 15–44) received information from their clinicians about EC and had ever used the measure.
Overall, 3% of respondents reported having received EC counseling during the previous year. Even among 4649 women who underwent pelvic exams or Pap smears, only 4% said they received EC counseling. Among respondents who received EC counseling, 43% did so at family planning clinics or Planned Paren…
