In the U.S., almost one quarter of women who undergo abortions must travel ≥50 miles for services (Perspect Sex Reprod Health 2003; 35:6), and only 15 states permit certified nurse-midwives, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants to perform medical abortions. To explore options for better access to abortion, researchers conducted a prospective cohort study of medical abortion services provided in person or through telemedicine to 578 women whose pregnancies were confirmed at one of Iowa's Planned Parenthood of the Heartland clinics.
