In 1996, the American Council on Graduate Medical Education required that abortion training be included in accredited obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) residency programs. Nonetheless, the number of abortion providers has declined during the past few decades. Investigators conducted a national survey to evaluate demographics and characteristics of practicing OB-GYNs who provide abortion services in the U.S.
Of 1031 respondents, 97.0% reported that they encountered patients who sought abortions, but only 14.4% provided these services. Female OB-GYNs were more likely than males to provide abortion services (18.6% vs. 10.6%), and physicians in the youngest age group (≤35; 22.0%) were more likely to perform abortions.
