Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality after gynecologic surgery, and guidelines for VTE prophylaxis have been developed. Investigators evaluated inpatient data on 738,150 women who underwent abdominal or vaginal surgery for benign disease at >500 U.S. hospitals from 2000 through 2010.
Forty percent of women received no perioperative VTE prophylaxis; mechanical (graduated compression stockings or intermittent pneumatic compression), pharmacologic (unfractionated heparin, low molecular weight heparin, or fondaparinux), or a combination of treatments was provided to 47%, 6%, and 8% of women, respectively.
