Despite their preference for oral contraceptives (OCs), young women are often inconsistent, incorrect users. Researchers at Columbia University made use of young women's tendencies toward avid cell-phone use to investigate the efficacy of daily text messages on rates of OC continuation. A total of 968 sexually active teens and women (age range, 13–25) were recruited at a Brooklyn Planned Parenthood clinic. All participants received standard contraceptive counseling and educational handouts; those in the intervention group also received, over the course of 6 months, 180 daily text messages that included reminders to take their pills as well as information about OCs (e.g., risks, benefits, side effects, effectiveness).
