Symptomatic endometriosis is commonly treated with conservative surgery with or without the addition of various medical therapies. In a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, investigators in Thailand studied the efficacy of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) inserted at the time of laparoscopic surgery.
Diagnosis of endometriosis was made by direct visualization for all 55 patients and confirmed histopathologically in the 38 women from whom tissue samples were obtained. Women randomized to the LNG-IUS and to expectant management were comparable with regard to age, body-mass index, parity, and baseline pain scores.
