Although many clinicians have the impression that use of progestin in menopausal hormone therapy affects mood negatively, data are inconsistent. Researchers analyzed the results of two trials involving perimenopausal and postmenopausal women; one trial enrolled 52 nondepressed women (Menopause 2006; 13:411) and the other enrolled 72 women with clinical depression (J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2011; 96:E1044). Participants were randomized to transdermal estradiol or placebo for 2 or 3 months.
