Because in vitro studies have shown that over-the-counter vaginal lubricants reduce sperm motility, professional organizations have advised couples attempting to conceive to refrain from use of such lubricants. US investigators recruited women (age range, 30–44) who had been attempting to conceive for ≤3 months and had no histories of subfertility. Study participants completed daily diaries and were followed until pregnancy was diagnosed or 6 months had elapsed.
Of 296 evaluable women, 37% did not conceive during the study. One quarter of participants reported that they used lubricants while attempting to conceive; use was reported as occasional, frequent, and every time by 44%, 31%, and 24% of users, respectively. Lubricant users were young…
