The term STD refers to any of a variety of syndromes (group of symptoms) caused by disease-causing agents passed from one person to another by exchange of body fluids (precum, semen, blood, vaginal fluid) through oral, anal, or vaginal sex or kissing. Although there are many STDs, this handout covers chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV, the cause of genital warts and most cervical cancers), trichomoniasis, and hepatitis B.
