Obstetrician-gynecologists (OB/GYNs) are strategically placed to identify HIV infection in women. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends opt-out testing, in which the patient is tested unless she declines. However, many states require explicit consent. Investigators sought to assess current HIV testing practices of OB/GYNs in both pregnant and nonpregnant women.
Surveys were sent to 1200 ACOG fellows nationwide; the response rate was 41%. Only 22% of respondents reported that they recommended routine HIV screening to all nonpregnant patients.
