Contraceptive use is an important measure of a nation's health because it affects pregnancy rates and outcomes. Data from the most recent National Survey of Family Growth show that 62% of all U.S. women of reproductive age (range, 15–44) and 89% of those at risk for unintended pregnancy are currently using contraception. However, millions of U.S. women continue to depend on relatively ineffective methods such as withdrawal; and oral contraceptives, which typically fail in >8% of women during the first year of use, remain the most common method (used by 10.6 million women [28% of those using contraception]).
