Because almost half of U.S. pregnancy terminations are repeat abortions, improving postabortion contraception is a critical need. To estimate whether women who received subdermal implants immediately after suction abortion were more likely than other implant users to discontinue use within 12 months, investigators analyzed data collected as part of the St. Louis CHOICE project. Included in this cohort study were 141 women with postabortion implants and 935 women who received implants ≥6 weeks after their last pregnancies.
Continuation rates at 12 months were similar between groups: 82% among women with immediate postabortion implant placement and 83% among other women (P=0.54). User satisfaction was also similar between groups.
