To address the growing number of U.S. cesarean deliveries as well as the comorbidities associated with repeat cesarean deliveries, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists conducted a workshop on preventing unnecessary first cesarean deliveries.
The authors note that few indications for cesarean delivery are absolute; thus, most decisions to perform the procedure depend on the clinician's interpretation of certain factors before and during labor. Indications include:
Arrest of first-stage labor (15%–30% of cesarean deliveries)
Arrest of second-stage labor (10%–25%)
Malpresentation (10%–15%)
