The Alzheimer Association estimates that 5.4 million Americans currently have diagnosed Alzheimer disease (AD). Costs of care are estimated at US$200 billion annually; in addition, 15 million unpaid caregivers provide support services. However, data about effective preventive strategies are limited. Researchers conducted a cross-sectional review of 261 women (mean age, 52) in the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention to determine if use of hormonal contraception influenced cognition later in life.
